Obama Administration Delays Health Care Law Deadline

Businesses get another year to meet insurance requirements (July 2)

The Obama Administration has announced that it is giving businesses an additional year before the mandatory employer and insurer reporting requirements under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) kick in. Now, employers aren’t required to provide health insurance for their workers until January 2015.

“Just like the Administration’s effort to turn the initial 21-page application for health insurance into a three-page application, we are working hard to adapt and to be flexible about reporting requirements as we implement the law,” said a Treasury Department blog.

In a report from Reuters, Republicans saw the move as evidence that President Obama’s plan was a failure, while Democrats termed it a demonstration of flexibility.

Companies would have had to pay the Internal Revenue Service $2,000 for each full-time employee who did not get health coverage, beginning January 1, when the PPACA is scheduled to go into full effect.

Reuters noted that the new decision was announced quietly through two blog posts, one on the Treasury Department’s Web site and the other at Whitehouse.gov, at a time when Obama was traveling overseas and Congress was in recess for the Fourth of July holiday.
